2017 PMA Summary from Newly-Elected PMA President, Linda Katz

The PMA (Polyurethane Manufacturers Association) is 130 companies strong.  288 people from Canada, the US, and every continent except Antarctica, representing ninety companies in the cast polyurethane industry attended the PMA Annual Meeting in gorgeous Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 7-9, 2017.  Molded Dimensions, Inc. was represented by Tony Lukas, Sara Sina, and Linda Katz.

Phil Green, the PMA president, shared the PMA mission, which is to provide a cost-effective forum for the cast polyurethane industry by sharing knowledge and discovering new technologies, ultimately leading to industry growth and increased market share for member companies.

The theme of the 2017 PMA Annual Meeting was Embracing Change, and Keynote Speaker Scott Steinberg encouraged all members to Embrace Change in his talk, Leading with Innovation:  How to Future-Proof Yourself, Fearlessly Innovate, and Succeed in the New Normal.

Sara Sina and Linda Katz from Molded Dimensions presented a technical paper they co-authored with Carol Nikolaus covering Molded Dimensions’ five-year journey using a cross-functional Urethane Restoration Team to study problem parts, brainstorm root causes, test theories, identify root causes, and improve our urethane molding equipment and processes to reduce variation and slash scrap from nearly 4% to 1-1.5%.  Additional technical papers were presented including Spin Casting and Thermoplastic Polyurethane.    The Urethane Restoration Team paper was voted “Best Technical Paper” at the conference.

As part of the meeting, teams of PMA attendees entered the Failed Parts Competition where they put their heads together to examine fifteen failed parts and see how the defects could be avoided in the future.  Everybody loves this part of the conference!

Don Gallo, the PMA’s esteemed legal counsel, presented the group with the annual regulatory update.  The PMA strives to ensure that everyone in the cast urethane industry is using all  chemicals safely by providing Safe Use Guidance documents, training materials, a Self Certification program for Health and Safety, and a Verified Safe and Compliant program.  Molded Dimensions is proud to be at the highest level in the Self Certification program, (Level 4 – Mentoring) and also Verified Safe and Compliant.

PMA members also enjoyed a Carbon 3D printing presentation that showed athletic shoe soles grown from liquid PU.  Carbon 3D and other suppliers had opportunity to show off all their products at the Supplier Showcase.

The grand finale was a wonderful Awards Banquet where Jerry Bryce, Naureen Stone, Bill Brown, and Don Barge were recognized with PMA Lifetime Achievement Awards for their incredible contributions to our industry.  We also remembered Shenshen Wu and Jay Meili who both passed away in the past year.  The heartfelt tribute to Jay Meili was prepared and presented by Linda Katz.

Linda Katz from Molded Dimensions completed a two year term as VP/Secretary/Treasurer of the PMA and kicked off a two year term as President of the PMA.  She is the second female PMA President in the PMA’s 46 year history, and was honored to be photographed with polyurethane rockstar Naureen Stone (below).
